Protect Nature, Wildlife, and Communities in Zanziba
Become part of a meaningful mission
About the Program
At the Mwanga wa Kesho Project, we believe that protecting nature is essential for building a better, brighter future. Our project works tirelessly to support environmental conservation while helping local communities understand the critical importance of protecting forests, marine ecosystems, sea turtles, reptiles, and other wildlife native to Zanzibar.
Many communities in Zanzibar depend heavily on natural resources for their daily survival. Through this program, we aim to encourage sustainable practices that protect both the environment and the wellbeing of local people. As a volunteer, you will play an indispensable role in helping us raise awareness and support long-term, impactful conservation efforts.
What Volunteers Will Do
Hands-On Conservation & Community Impact
Our volunteers participate in a variety of hands-on activities connected to wildlife and environmental protection. Throughout the program, you will work closely with local teams, conservation projects, and nearby communities, gaining valuable experience and deep knowledge about conservation work in Zanzibar.
Key Activities Include:
Wildlife Care: Supporting turtle and reptile conservation activities, animal care, and sanctuary maintenance.
Habitat Restoration: Participating in beach, forest, and environmental clean-up activities, as well as mangrove and tree planting projects.
Research & Learning: Learning about local wildlife, ecosystems, and environmental challenges while taking part in conservation research.
Community Outreach: Visiting schools and community centers to teach environmental education and encourage sustainable living and wildlife protection within local communities.
A Typical Day as a Volunteer
At the Mwanga wa Kesho Project, every day brings a new experience filled with learning, teamwork, and meaningful conservation activities.
The Morning Routine: Volunteers normally begin the day around 8:00 AM before traveling to project locations, including conservation areas, beaches, forests, and sanctuary sites around Zanzibar.
Local Culture: You will usually travel to the project areas by dala dala (local bus), giving you the opportunity to experience everyday local life and culture in Zanzibar. The journey normally takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on the location.
Weekly Itinerary
The week begins with introductions, orientation activities, and conservation learning sessions. Volunteers will learn more about Zanzibar’s environment, marine life, wildlife protection, and the challenges facing local ecosystems and communities. You will meet our local coordinators and conservation teams who will guide you throughout the program.
These days focus on practical conservation activities and sanctuary support, making a direct contribution to protecting animals and preserving the environment.
Assisting with turtle and reptile care & preparing animal feeding/enrichment activities.
Cleaning, maintaining sanctuary areas, and supporting habitat maintenance.

Towards the end of the week, shift your focus toward promoting environmental awareness and sustainable living. Volunteers visit local schools, youth groups, and community centers to teach interactive lessons on:

Sustainable community practices.
After daily volunteer activities, the time is yours! Many volunteers spend their afternoons and weekends relaxing at the beach, exploring the historic streets of Zanzibar, swimming, visiting local villages, or socializing with fellow international travelers.
