The Heart of the Mission
Program Description
In Zanzibar, animals—from the domestic companions in our streets to the majestic wildlife in our bush—are an integral part of our community’s soul. Unfortunately, many suffer from neglect, habitat loss, or a lack of medical care.
Our Animal Rescue & Welfare program is built on the belief that a community’s “light” is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable inhabitants. We don’t just provide temporary shelter; we work to heal, rehabilitate, vaccination and create a culture of empathy that ensures every animal can live with dignity.
A Day in the Life
The Rescue Rhythm
Your day begins at 9:00 AM, diving straight into the heart of animal care. From the shelter to the streets, you’ll support a diverse family of domestic dogs, cats, and rescued monkeys. Mornings are dedicated to the essentials: exercising the dogs, providing specialized enrichment for primates, and assisting with medical treatments or physiotherapy in our specialized pool. Whether you are bottle-feeding an orphaned monkey or training a dog for its forever home, your presence provides the vital socialization these animals need to heal.
In the afternoons, you’ll join our veterinary team for community outreach, traveling to local villages to treat sick or injured animals and support life-saving vaccination campaigns. You don’t need prior experience—just a love for all creatures and a willingness to get your hands dirty. Every task, from building climbing structures for primates to assisting in field clinics, ensures that the “Light of Tomorrow” reaches every paw, claw, and spirit in our care.
This is a hands-on, heart-led placement. You don’t need professional veterinary experience—just a deep love for all creatures, basic English, and a fearless attitude toward getting your hands dirty! Whether you are socializing a cat for adoption, bottle-feeding a monkey, or assisting in a field clinic, your work is dictated by the immediate needs of the animals.
Note: Prepare for “happy paws,” curious primates, and a bit of dirt—it’s all part of the transformation!
