Frequently Asked Questions.
How far in advance should I submit my application?
You should apply as soon as you’re 100% ready to join us — there’s no such thing as applying too early for a Mwanga wa kesho project volunteer program!
Most of our programs are open for applications year-round, but we strongly recommend applying as early as possible to secure your spot. Some of our volunteer opportunities have limited spaces, and they can fill up fast! We recommend applying 1 to 2 months before your intended start date. This gives you ample time to arrange your travel, secure your flights, and complete your onboarding documentation. However, we do accept late applications up to 2 weeks before a program begins, provided space is still available in your chosen project track.
What is the exact process for joining the project? Our application process is simple and broken down into 6 clear steps:
Decide On Your Projects – Choose your volunteer track.
Apply VIA FORM – Fill out your details completely using our official booking link.
Await Team Outreach – Our team will contact you via Email or WhatsApp within 2–3 business days.
Provide Onboarding Info – Share your passport number and required documents.
Secure Your Placement – Complete your program fee contribution.
Go! – Pack your bags and head to Zanzibar!
Not sure which program suits you best? We’re here to help! Whether you’re looking for a vibrant destination with plenty of fellow volunteers or dreaming of a more independent adventure off the beaten track, let us know what you’re looking for. Your preferences help us recommend the perfect program to align with your travel goals.
What details and documents do I need to provide?
Initial Booking Form: Basic personal info, project choices, contact details (including an active WhatsApp number), and a brief description of your background.
Onboarding Stage: Once our team contacts you, you must provide your passport number (valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay). Depending on the project, you may also need to share relevant medical information, background references, or a police clearance certificate.
Are my flights and travel insurance included? No, volunteers are fully responsible for booking their own flights and obtaining comprehensive travel insurance.
Flights: You should book your flights to arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) or take the ferry to Zanzibar from Dar es Salaam.
Insurance: Travel insurance is strongly recommended and must cover medical emergencies, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and personal liability. Mwanga wa Kesho Project does not cover medical or travel expenses incurred during your trip.
Can I apply alongside friends, family, or a university group? Absolutely! We welcome groups, couples, and friends who want to volunteer together. To make this happen, each individual should fill out their own separate application via our booking link. Make sure everyone notes the names of the other group members in the background/notes section of the form so our team can ensure you are placed in the same project track and shared accommodation.
Can I combine different projects or explore multiple project sites? Yes! If you are interested in experiencing different community tracks during your time in Zanzibar, you can easily combine projects. Simply state your interest when filling out the initial booking form, or discuss it directly with our coordination team during Step 3 (Team Outreach). We will happily customize your itinerary to create the ultimate volunteer adventure.
