About the Program

At the Mwanga wa Kesho Project, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and feel supported in a safe and caring environment. Our Childcare and Education Volunteer Program was created to support children from local communities in Zanzibar by improving access to early childhood education and providing meaningful learning experiences during their most critical years of development.

We are proud to work in partnership with local pre-primary schools and kindergartens that care for children between the ages of 4 to 7 years old. Together with local teachers and school staff, we aim to create a positive learning environment where children can develop confidence, creativity, communication skills, and a lifelong love for learning.

Many families within the community face challenges accessing quality early childhood education due to limited resources and opportunities. Through this program, volunteers help bridge this gap—supporting children’s educational development while creating a safe, fun, and encouraging atmosphere for personal growth.

What Volunteers Will Do.

Hands-On Conservation & Community Impact

Working alongside local educators, you will help create engaging and interactive lessons that encourage children to learn through creativity, play, and communication. Core Activities includes:

  • Classroom Support: Assisting local teachers during classroom lessons and helping create a welcoming, positive classroom environment.

  • Foundational Learning: Helping children with basic English, literacy, and mathematics.

  • Creative Engagement: Supporting learning through games, music, storytelling, and art activities to encourage creativity and teamwork.

  • Care & Mentorship: Providing individual attention, emotional support, and positive social interaction to children.

  • The Commute: Head to your school placement either by a pleasant walk or a short, lively dala dala (local bus) ride, giving you an authentic taste of everyday life in Zanzibar.

  • Note: During your first few days, you will be fully introduced to the school environment, local teaching methods, and daily routines to help you get comfortable.

  • The Atmosphere: Spend your morning supporting local teachers and engaging with energetic children aged 4 to 7. The environment is vibrant, interactive, and focused on growth.

  • Mid-Morning: A short break allows both children and volunteers time to relax, play games, and recharge.

  • Early Afternoon: The school day wraps up, and volunteers head back to the accommodation for lunch.

Afternoons and weekends are entirely yours to relax, socialize, and explore!

  • Beachfront Living: The volunteer accommodation is located very close to the beach and nearby resorts, making it easy to enjoy Zanzibar’s beautiful coastline, restaurants, and cafés.
